What goes into a wall that lasts
Most walls fail because of what's hidden behind them. Here's what we do on every job — these are photos from one of our concrete sleeper walls.

Site visit & set-out
We measure, check levels, access, services and approvals, then give you a fixed written quote.

Excavation & footings
We cut the batter, drill post holes to the right depth and concrete in hot-dip galvanised posts.

Build the wall
Sleepers, blocks or stone go in true and level, course by course.

Geofabric
Geotextile fabric goes behind the wall so silt can never clog the drainage.

Drainage & backfill
Slotted ag pipe and clean aggregate go in, connected to a legal outlet, then we backfill and compact.

Clean up & handover
We tidy the site and walk you through the finished wall — ready for lawn, garden or paving.
What will my retaining wall cost?
Most Sydney walls are priced per square metre of wall face. Material is the biggest factor — then height, access, excavation and whether the wall needs engineering.
Here are honest ballpark ranges. We'll give you a fixed written price after a free site visit.
Read the full cost guide| Wall type | Typical price / m² | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Timber (treated pine / hardwood) | $300 – $550 | Garden beds and low walls; 15–20+ year life |
| Concrete sleeper | $450 – $800 | Most popular; termite-proof; 50+ year sleeper life |
| Block — segmental / besser | $550 – $1,000 | Taller and architectural walls; often engineered |
| Gabion | $550 – $1,000 | Free-draining; needs more width |
| Natural sandstone block | $750 – $1,400 | Premium look; needs machine access |
Indicative per m² of wall face, supplied & installed with drainage. Site-specific extras apply.

Retaining wall questions
How much does a retaining wall cost in Sydney?
Most residential retaining walls in Sydney cost roughly $300–$1,400 per square metre of wall face, depending on the material, height, access and drainage. Timber is cheapest, concrete sleepers are mid-range and natural sandstone is at the top. See our retaining wall cost guide.
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?
Low walls (generally up to 600mm) that meet the NSW exempt development standards usually don't. Taller walls, walls on or near a boundary, and walls supporting driveways or buildings usually need a Complying Development Certificate or DA and an engineer's design. Read our council approval guide.
What is the best type of retaining wall?
For most Sydney garden and boundary walls, concrete sleepers with galvanised steel posts give the best balance of cost, lifespan and speed. Sandstone suits premium and heritage settings, and block walls suit taller or engineered walls.
How long does it take to build a retaining wall?
A typical 10–15m concrete sleeper garden wall takes around 2–4 days on site. Larger, engineered or sandstone walls take longer, and approvals (if needed) add time before we start.
Who actually builds the wall?
Our own crew. All Retaining Walls Sydney is a licensed Sydney building company — not a referral or lead website. The people who quote your wall are the people who build it.
Do you work in my suburb?
