Sydney sits on Hawkesbury sandstone, so sandstone walls look at home in almost every suburb — from the harbourside streets of the North Shore to the Sutherland Shire and the Northern Beaches. There are two ways to get the look, and the right one depends on your budget, the height of the wall and the access to your site.

Option 1: Natural sandstone block walls

Sawn sandstone blocks — commonly around 900 × 450 × 450mm and several hundred kilos each — are stacked on a concrete footing and placed with an excavator. Their sheer weight holds back the soil, which makes them a gravity wall.

  • Best for: feature walls, garden terraces, heritage and period homes, and sites where the natural look matters most.
  • Things to know: blocks are heavy and need machine access; costs are higher per square metre; taller walls still need engineering and a proper footing.
  • Finish: split-face or sawn blocks; the colour varies naturally from cream to gold to rust.

Option 2: Sandstone-look concrete sleepers

Rock-face concrete sleepers coloured to match sandstone, fitted between galvanised steel posts. You get a warm sandstone tone with the speed, slim footprint and lower cost of a concrete sleeper wall. The photos on this page are sandstone-look sleeper walls we've built.

  • Best for: long boundary walls, tight backyards, sites without room for an excavator to swing heavy blocks.
  • Things to know: the wall is only about 80mm thick plus posts, so you keep more of your yard.

Built properly underneath

Whichever look you choose, the wall still needs a proper footing, ag pipe, clean aggregate and geotextile fabric behind it. Sandstone is porous — a wall that stays wet goes dark, grows moss and weathers faster, so good drainage matters even more.

Frequently asked questions

Is sandstone good for retaining walls?

Yes. Sawn sandstone blocks make strong, long-lasting gravity walls when they sit on a proper concrete footing with drainage behind them. Sandstone is porous, so drainage is essential to stop the wall staying wet.

What is the difference between sandstone blocks and sandstone-look sleepers?

Natural blocks are solid sandstone that hold back soil by their weight. Sandstone-look sleepers are coloured, textured concrete sleepers fitted between steel posts. The sleepers are slimmer, faster and cheaper; the blocks are the authentic look.

Can you match an existing sandstone wall?

Often, yes. Natural sandstone varies in colour, so we'll look at your existing wall and source blocks that sit well with it. Weathering will blend the new and old over time.
