Retaining wall prices in Sydney at a glance
Retaining walls are usually priced per square metre of wall face (length × height). A 10m-long wall that is 1m high is 10m². Here are typical ranges for residential walls in Sydney:
| Wall type | Typical price / m² | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Timber (treated pine / hardwood) | $300 – $550 | Garden beds and low walls; 15–20+ year life |
| Concrete sleeper | $450 – $800 | Most popular; termite-proof; 50+ year sleeper life |
| Block — segmental / besser | $550 – $1,000 | Taller and architectural walls; often engineered |
| Gabion | $550 – $1,000 | Free-draining; needs more width |
| Natural sandstone block | $750 – $1,400 | Premium look; needs machine access |

What pushes the price up (or down)
1. Height
Cost rises faster than height. Taller walls need bigger posts, deeper footings, more drainage — and over about 1m, engineering and usually approval. See engineered retaining walls.
2. Access
If a mini excavator can drive to the wall, the job is faster. If everything goes down a narrow side passage or steep stairs by wheelbarrow, labour goes up. This is common in the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and on the North Shore.
3. Excavation, rock and spoil
Cutting into a slope creates soil that has to go somewhere. Removing and tipping spoil, and cutting or drilling through sandstone, can be a significant part of the price on some sites.
4. What the wall supports
A wall holding back a garden is simpler than one holding up a driveway, pool or house. Loads above the wall ("surcharge") mean heavier construction.
5. Drainage and outlets
Every wall needs drainage. Where the ag pipe has to run a long way to reach a stormwater point, or a pit or pump is needed, that adds cost.
6. Removing an old wall
Demolishing and disposing of an old timber, brick or block wall adds labour and tip fees. See repairs & replacement.
7. Engineering and approvals
Engineering for a straightforward residential wall is commonly several hundred to a few thousand dollars. Certifier or council fees are extra where approval is needed. See the approval guide.
How to compare retaining wall quotes
Two quotes for "a 12m retaining wall" can be very different jobs. Before you compare prices, check each quote states:
- Wall type, sleeper/block product and finish
- Post size, spacing and footing depth (and whether posts are hot-dip galvanised)
- Drainage — ag pipe, aggregate, geotextile and where the water goes
- Excavation, spoil removal and tip fees
- Whether engineering and approvals are needed and included
- Clean-up, and who is actually doing the work
- Licence number and insurance
Watch out for: quotes with no drainage, painted instead of galvanised posts, or a 1m+ wall under a driveway with no mention of engineering. The cheapest quote often becomes the most expensive wall.
Retaining wall cost FAQs
How much does a retaining wall cost per metre in Sydney?
For a typical 1m-high wall, that works out to roughly $300–$550 per lineal metre for timber, $450–$800 for concrete sleepers and $750–$1,400 for natural sandstone, before site-specific extras like excavation, rock, access and engineering.
What is the cheapest retaining wall?
Treated pine timber sleepers are the cheapest up front. Over 20+ years, concrete sleepers often work out cheaper because they don't need replacing.
Does the quote include drainage?
Yes. Every quote includes ag pipe, aggregate backfill and geotextile fabric. We don't treat drainage as an optional extra because it is what stops walls failing.
Is engineering included?
If your wall needs engineering or approval, we tell you at the site visit and include it as a clear line item in the quote.
