The Hills District is full of newer homes on sloping, cut-and-fill blocks — and a lot of them were handed over with no retaining at all, or with cheap timber walls that are already failing. Concrete sleeper walls are by far the most common job we do here.

Typical Hills District retaining wall jobs
- New-estate boundary walls in Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Box Hill and Beaumont Hills where neighbouring lots sit at different levels.
- Levelling backyards for lawn, pools and outdoor living.
- Replacing failing treated-pine walls on 10–25-year-old homes in Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills.
- Acreage walls in Dural, Kenthurst and Glenhaven — driveways, sheds and pads.
What to know building here
Much of the Hills sits on heavy, reactive clay derived from shale. Clay holds water and pushes hard when wet, so we never use it as backfill behind a wall — clean aggregate and ag pipe are essential (see drainage). On new estates, check your 88B instrument and estate guidelines: many have rules on boundary walls and easements.

Frequently asked questions
Do you build retaining walls in Hills District?
Yes. We build concrete sleeper, sandstone, timber, block and engineered retaining walls across Hills District, including Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills, Kellyville, Kellyville Ridge, Rouse Hill, Bella Vista and surrounding suburbs.
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall in Hills District?
It depends on the height, location and what the wall supports. Hills District is covered by The Hills Shire Council. Low walls meeting the NSW exempt development standards often don't need approval; taller or boundary walls usually do. We check the controls for your address — see our approval guide.
How much does a retaining wall cost in Hills District?
Most walls fall between roughly $300 and $1,400 per square metre of wall face depending on material, height and access. Tight access and rock can add cost. See our cost guide or ask for a free fixed quote.
