Retaining Wall FAQs

Straight answers to the questions Sydney homeowners ask us most.

Common questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in Sydney?

Most residential retaining walls in Sydney cost roughly $300–$1,400 per square metre of wall face, depending on the material, height, access and drainage. Timber is cheapest, concrete sleepers are mid-range and natural sandstone is at the top. See our retaining wall cost guide.

Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?

Low walls (generally up to 600mm) that meet the NSW exempt development standards usually don't. Taller walls, walls on or near a boundary, and walls supporting driveways or buildings usually need a Complying Development Certificate or DA and an engineer's design. Read our council approval guide.

What is the best type of retaining wall?

For most Sydney garden and boundary walls, concrete sleepers with galvanised steel posts give the best balance of cost, lifespan and speed. Sandstone suits premium and heritage settings, and block walls suit taller or engineered walls.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

A typical 10–15m concrete sleeper garden wall takes around 2–4 days on site. Larger, engineered or sandstone walls take longer, and approvals (if needed) add time before we start.

Who actually builds the wall?

Our own crew. All Retaining Walls Sydney is a licensed Sydney building company — not a referral or lead website. The people who quote your wall are the people who build it.

Do you work in my suburb?

We build retaining walls right across Sydney — from the Inner West and Eastern Suburbs to the Hills, the Northern Beaches and the Sutherland Shire. See all service areas.

What is the best retaining wall for a sloping backyard?

Usually a series of lower terraced walls rather than one tall wall. Concrete sleepers are the most common choice; sandstone and segmental block suit feature terraces. Tall or closely spaced terraces need engineering.

What is the best retaining wall for clay soil?

Any wall type can work on clay if it is drained properly. The key is never using clay as backfill — use clean aggregate, ag pipe and geotextile, and size footings for reactive soil.

Can you build a retaining wall with a fence on top?

Yes. Fences can be fixed to extended posts or set behind the wall, but the wall must be designed for the extra wind load. Tell us at the quote stage.

Do you remove the soil?

Yes. Excavation, spoil removal and tip fees are itemised in the quote, and we leave the site clean.

Can you build around trees?

Often, yes — with care for the root zone. Significant trees may be protected by council, in which case an arborist's advice or approval may be needed.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Our work is covered by our workmanship warranty and statutory warranties under the NSW Home Building Act. Details are set out in your contract.
